Sulfuryl Fluoride
Chemical Formula: SO2F2
Typical Detection Wavelength: 6.64µm
Filter Type: Narrow Bandpass (NBP)
Description: Sulfuryl Fluoride is commonly used as a fumigant insecticide due to its effectiveness in quickly eliminating infestations. It is classed as a hazardous gas and can cause debilitating and severe attacks on the nervous and neurological systems of the body. Sulfuryl Fluoride is a Greenhouse gas that is extremely effective in trapping IR radiation, significantly more so than CO2, and as such needs the be detected and controlled swiftly.
An infrared optical filter can be successfully used for the early detection and warning of the presence of Sulfuryl Fluoride in the atmosphere, as the SO2F2 gas absorbs IR radiation at a specific wavelength with typical absorption around 6.64µm.
Example Transmission Curve:
Centre Wavelength: 6.64µm ± 0.5%
Half Bandwidth: 210nm ± 21nm
Transmission Peak: >70%
Umicore has significant experience in producing IR Filters to the highest standards for the early detection of Sulfuryl Fluoride and many other gasses.
