Methane
Chemical Formula: CH4
Typical Detection Wavelength: 3.33µm
Filter Type: Narrow Bandpass (NBP)
Description: Methane is one of the prevalent naturally occurring gasses on Earth, and given its relatively stable condition and highly flammable properties, it is widely used as a fuel to generate electricity and heat homes. Methane is an asphyxiant and significant exposure to the gas can cause serious health issues, as well as the potential for ignition and explosion.
An infrared optical filter can be successfully used for the early detection and warning of the presence of Methane in the atmosphere, as the CH4 gas absorbs IR radiation at a specific wavelength with typical absorption around 3.33µm.
Example Transmission Curve:
Centre Wavelength: 3.33µm ± 0.5%
Half Bandwidth: 150nm ± 15nm
Transmission Peak: >70%
Umicore has significant experience in producing IR Filters to the highest standards for the early detection of Methane and many other gasses.
