Carbon Monoxide
Chemical Formula: CO
Typical Detection Wavelength: 2.30µm
Filter Type: Narrow Bandpass (NBP)
Description: Carbon Monoxide detectors can be found in most households that have a natural gas supply used for cooking and heating appliances. It is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that can cause serious health issues, including death, with sufficient exposure. Carbon Monoxide is also used in a variety of controlled industrial processes and applications, and given its noxiousness early detection of even the smallest amount is critical.
An infrared optical filter can be successfully used for the early detection and warning of the presence of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere, as the CO gas absorbs IR radiation at a specific wavelength with typical absorption around 2.30µm.
Example Transmission Curve:
Centre Wavelength: 2.30µm ± 0.5%
Half Bandwidth: 50nm ± 10nm
Transmission Peak: >70%
Umicore has significant experience in producing IR Filters to the highest standards for the early detection of Carbon Monoxide and many other gasses.
