Acetylene
Chemical Formula: C2H2
Typical Detection Wavelength: 3.055µm
Filter Type: Narrow Bandpass (NBP)
Description: Acetylene has many practical functions and is predominantly used as a fuel in welding applications due to its high temperature burn of its flame when combined with Oxygen. Acetylene is not particularly toxic, but it is highly flammable meaning that it has to be controlled and used in a safe manner.
An infrared optical filter can be successfully used for the early detection and warning of the presence of Acetylene in the atmosphere, as the C2H2 gas absorbs IR radiation at a specific wavelength with typical absorption around 3.055µm.
Example Transmission Curve:
Centre Wavelength: 3.055µm ± 0.5%
Half Bandwidth: 61nm ± 9nm
Transmission Peak: >70%
Umicore has significant experience in producing IR Filters to the highest standards for the early detection of Acetylene and many other gasses.
